The Caprese sandwich will please everyone! For a touch of flavor, layer tomatoes, mozzarella, and pesto-aioli.
The classic tomato, basil, and mozzarella combination is what’s best. We don’t think so. Try this refreshing summer delight, the Caprese sandwich. Capri’s classic Italian salad is reinterpreted with this sandwich-filling. The classic ingredients are layered together with a creamy pesto aioli, which adds an extra savory punch to every bite. This is a great idea for picnics and easy summer meals. Larson, our son, tried one bite and said “Can you eat it every day?”
Caprese sandwiches: Ingredients
Caprese sandwiches are sandwich made with the same ingredients as the Caprese Salad: tomato, mozzarella and basil. This sandwich can be made with many different ingredients, including arugula and balsamic vinegar. Caprese salad is a traditional Italian dish that doesn’t include balsamic reduction or balsamic vinegar. We don’t believe the flavors pair well so we won’t recommend it. We used pesto aioli, our favorite creamy spread which adds a savory taste to every bite.
This is what you will need to make this Caprese sandwich.
- Ciabatta bread and other artisan breads: Soft, delicious Italian bread that is perfect for making sandwiches. Avoid French baguettes, as they can be difficult to eat. You can use any other kind of bread!
- Use fresh tomatoes This is an essential! The best tomatoes are the ones that have been ripe and juiciest. This sandwich is similar to a BLT.
- Fresh mozzarella cheese: Purchase it in an 8-ounce bag and cut off pieces for the sandwich.
- Fresh basil: All you need to make a sandwich is a few leaves.
- Baby arugula.Arugula gives it a little more texture and flavor. Baby arugula should be purchased in bags or boxes. This will give it a lighter texture and milder taste. Don’t buy mature arugula in bulk because the taste is strong.
- Pesto Aioli: This is the kicker. Pesto aioli is a combination of basil, Parmesan cheese, lemon juice, and mayonnaise. It’s the perfect sandwich! It is essential to have it!
How to make pesto aioli
A great sandwich starts with a good spread. A great sandwich spread. Unseasoned bread is a must for a sandwich. The pesto aioli gives the sandwich the perfect creaminess and seasoning. This is what you need to know about pesto aioli.
- You can use a small or large food processor. You could also use a small blender.
- This works well for many sandwiches. It will make approximately 3-4 sandwiches depending on the amount you use.
- It is possible to make the ahead of time and keep it refrigerated . The color will fade over time.
Caprese sandwiches are available if you plan ahead
The Caprese sandwich makes a great picnic food. But how long does it last? Yes! Yes! Keep these things in mind.
- Each bread should be sprayed with pesto-aioli. Then, sprinkle a layer each of basil and arugula on top. This prevents bread from coming into direct contact with tomato sauce or mozzarella which could cause it to become soggy.
- Refrigeration is unnecessary if you are serving in less than 2 hours. After 2 hours, the mayonnaise in sandwich spread must be kept refrigerated.
- Wrap the sandwich in plastic wrap, and keep it at room temperature until you are ready to serve. Refrigerated bread can make the bread more tough so let it come to room temperature before you serve.
Alternative method
Caprese sandwiches can be made as hot sandwiches, such as the Panera Caprese sandwich. To make the sandwich, simply use slices of sandwich bread. Toast it on a panini for about 3-4 minutes or in a skillet or grill for approximately 2 minutes each side.
