What an allergist wants you to do if you have seasonal allergies

Seasonal allergies sufferers know how frustrating it is to feel completely knocked out by something so seemingly simple as a tree, grass or shrub. Payel Gupta MD is a Board-certified Allergist and Immunologist at Get Cleared. She says that you are more susceptible to contact dermatitis (an allergic reaction to certain products on your skin) if you suffer from seasonal allergies.

Dr. Gupta says that people with seasonal allergies, or atopic persons, are more likely to develop other allergic conditions such as contact dermatitis. People with seasonal allergies are not more sensitive than others to any one chemical or product.

Plant-based products are a good product category to watch out for.

Dr. Gupta says that plant-based products are those where actual plants or grasses are added to creams and lotions. This can be an allergen for people with allergy to pollens, depending on the way they’re made.

Beeswax-based eye makeup can be very irritating. Diane Hilal-Campo is a New Jersey-certified board-certified ophthalmologist. People with allergies to pollen will experience a severe reaction to beeswax. Many mascaras contain beeswax so their eyes can become very red,” Dr. Hilal-Campo (founder of Twenty/Twenty Beauty, an eye-friendly cosmetic brand), previously explained Well+Good.

If you are suffering from seasonal allergies or skin sensitivities Dr. Gupta suggests that your daily routine should be more minimalist.

People with sensitive skin should avoid products that have fragrances and minimal ingredients. This is because it can cause irritation. “Natural” products can contain as much chemicals as any other product, so be cautious about them,” Dr. Gupta says. Contact dermatitis can take several days to manifest because your body is sensitive to the ingredient. Sometimes it can be difficult to determine what is causing your reaction. It is possible that you have been using the product for days before experiencing your reaction.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream (22-$72) is an excellent moisturizing choice for the skin. Consider the La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm+ Intense Relief Moisturizing Crème ($20) for the body. They are both fragrance-free and soothing for sensitive skin. Try Dr. Hilal-Campo products, such as the Twenty/Twenty Beauty Clean Sweep mascara ($28).
